Celebrating Elena Kats-Chernin AO: 14-18 May 2023

Elena Kats-Chemin AO is one of Australia’s leading composers, at once trailblazing and reinventive, prolific and reflective. 3MBS Melbourne 103.5FM is privileged to have Elena at the station this May during Radiothon as an artist in-residence. Her residency will feature a series of concerts, interviews and compositional workshops that will be recorded and shared with the MBS network for national broadcast, celebrating Elena’s significant contribution to Australian music in this, her 65th year.

3MBS General Manager, Gail Southwell says 1we are delighted and humbled to be able to celebrate the legacy of Elena Kats-Chemin by hosting her as our inaugural 3MBS Artist-in-residence during Radiothon. Our annual Radiothon is a time to reflect on the wonderful music we broadcast and what better way to celebrate this than with one of Australia1s most influential composers. 1

This celebration will feature a series of five one-hour-long concerts in which Elena will collaborate with Melbourne musicians to perform a selection of her compositions – a combination of the familiar and brand-new arrangements of works not previously heard.

‘Presenting my work in a series of back-to-back concerts is something I have never ever experienced before. Being a composer/ I am mostly working in solitude for months and months. I enjoy collaboration enormously. Each time I learn a great deal about a performer and am always marvelling at how individual and unique each player isl and how every little nuance that we polish and perfect makes a huge difference. I can1t wait to be in the same room with these talented musicians.1 said Elena.

Presented at the Good Shepherd Chapel, Abbotsford, the first four concerts in the series will be ticketed (both in-venue and live video stream) and broadcast live on 3MBS. Elena will close the series with a solo recital broadcast live from the 3MBS Lady Marigold Southey Performance Studio on Thursday 18 May.
