Drawing on an unusually broad musical landscape, the exhibition references Mozart’s Requiem, Shostakovich’s Eighth String Quartet, Gabriella Smith, Bobbie Gentry, David Bowie, Price’s own compositions, and fragments of personal musical memory. Rather than illustrating music, the paintings emerge from it, transforming notation, gesture and remembered sound into visual form.

For many years, Price has explored the intersection of visual culture and music, creating installations in which large-scale musical notation becomes part of the visual experience. In Thin Places, he reimagines musical notation as a visual language. The hidden symbols traditionally read only by performers become painting—layered, obscured and reinterpreted through colour, texture and abstraction. In doing so, the works invite audiences to experience music through the act of looking.

The exhibition takes its title from the Celtic idea of “thin places”—locations where the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds becomes permeable. Throughout the exhibition, painting and music occupy a similarly liminal space, where memory, place and sound overlap.

Created on found and inherited canvases, each work retains traces of previous lives. Existing marks, textures and histories become part of the finished paintings, extending the exhibition’s exploration of memory, transformation and the passage of time.

Price is also widely recognised for his performing career, including his years as a member of ARIA Hall of Fame inductees, The Models. The exhibition includes Barbados, inspired by the band’s song of the same name and created following the death of bandmate James Valentine, and Lacrimosa, which reflects on grief and remembrance through the visual transformation of elements from Mozart’s Requiem.
