Celebrating Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
Andrew Dickeson
Quintet
Thursday, 5 June 2025
Andrew Dickeson leads an all-star group playing music from one of the world’s most famous Jazz bands – Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers.
In the 60s and 70s, listeners who had come to love jazz as their sophisticated popular music, found both swing and blues in abundance in the music of the Jazz Messengers, the quintessential hard bop ensemble led by drummer Art Blakey. With an evolving lineup that read like a who’s who of jazz – Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett and the Marsalis brothers to name but a few – by the ’80s, mainstream audiences overwhelmingly agreed that this, hard bop, is what jazz is, and Art Blakey was its master.
Taking the stage as bandleader, Dickeson and his quartet will honour this legendary drummer and his ensemble with a night of foot-tapping swing, featuring classic Jazz Messengers repertoire – including Bobby Timmons’ Hard Bop anthem “Moanin’” – along with other classic Messengers tunes and material by Blakey alumni. Joining him on stage will be four of Australia’s finest: Simon Ferenci on trumpet, Hugh Barrett on piano, Jacob Graham on bass and rising star Justin Yeo on the saxophone.
Wash away the dust of your day with a night of soulful sounds and fiery swing!

About Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
Art Blakey was a prominent figure in the hard bop movement of the mid-20th century jazz era, known for his powerful drumming and leadership of the Jazz Messengers. He first gained recognition in the 1940s playing with big bands like Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine, and then moved into bebop with musicians like Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. In the 1950s, Blakey formed the Jazz Messengers, a group that would evolve into a platform for emerging jazz talent and become a cornerstone of the hard bop sound.
